In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue (to Jamaica?)
Smack in the middle of Jamaica's north coast on the Caribbean Sea, picturesque Discovery Bay is dotted with pristine white sand beaches and stunning villas that will transport you away from the stress of big city life. The area's name comes from the long-held belief that this is where Columbus first landed in 1494 (it was actually a little farther away). Whether or not Columbus was here, a Discovery Bay vacation rental will let you discover the area's beauty for yourself, from the quaint town and interesting museums, to the gorgeous beaches and fascinating nature.
Travel back in time to the days of the early explorers
Even if Columbus didn't land here, there are plenty of artifacts from that era on display at Columbus Park, an open-air museum showcasing relics that were discovered when the Kaiser Bauxite Company excavated the area. Along with pieces from Columbian and colonial times, you'll find 18th-century cannons and remains of an old sugar estate. A few miles away, a visit to the Green Grotto Caves will take you even further back in time, with relics of the native Taino Arawak people. The caves also reportedly played a big role in allowing the Spaniards to escape the British invasion of 1655.
Water, water everywhere (and plenty of beaches, too)
Originally named Dry Harbour (Puerto Seco) Bay by Columbus due to the lack of rivers, Discovery Bay is anything but dry. The vibrant turquoise waters stretch for miles along the clean white sand beaches, which see some spectacular sunrises and sunsets. Rising above the city is Dry Harbour Mountain. You'll also find the Discovery Bay Marine Laboratory here, which studies the coral reef and tropical marine wildlife off the island's shores. You might even see some for yourself if you head out to play in the crystal clear waters.
Traveling to and around Discovery Bay
Fly into Sir Donald Sangster Intl. Airport (MBJ), the closest airport, located 34.1 mi (54.9 km) from the city center. If you can't find a flight that works for your travel itinerary, you could book a flight to Ocho Rios (OCJ-Ian Fleming Intl.), which is 28.5 mi (45.9 km) away.
